What is Judo?

Judo is a contact sport created in Japan in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano. It's most prominent feature is it's competitive element, the object of which is to throw one's opponent to the ground, immobilize one's opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force one's opponent to submit.
There is only one recognized form of Judo in the world which is governed by the international Judo Federation (IJF). With 183 member nations, Judo is the largest international sports organization in the world and the first martial art to be part of the Olympic Games. Judo is the second most practice sport in the world with over 8 million registered athletes, second only to soccer. The worldwide spread of Judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as Sambo and the widely popular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our Philosophy

We are a nationally registered club, sanctioned by the USA Judo and the United States Judo Federation. We are here to train those interested in Judo for competition, conditioning, or even to study the philosophical aspect of this beautiful martial art. We can get you started with basic stretching and strength training until you feel ready to try something more. The next step could be something as simple as learning how to safely fall.
We follow the Judo principle of "mutual respect and benefit", so although we love to compete, self-discipline and respect for each other always comes first. Some of the best memories of practicing Judo were made after class sitting around on the mat hanging out with new friends.

Learn Goal-Setting Skills

Belt testing provides an excellent physical and mental exercise for adults to improve their goal-setting skills. Your self-esteem will continue to rise with each accomplishment, as you watch your hard work pay off.

Improve Focus
and Self-Control

Complex physical activities such as martial arts have proven to strengthen the brain’s neural networks, helping adults improve their focus and reduce stress levels. This can be a great deterrent against depression and other mental health issues.

Improve Your Self-Esteem

The excitement and sentiments you feel when sparring with a partner in front of your instructor and classmates are the same you feel when you are asked to give an important presentation at work, approach your boss for a promotion, or ask a potential partner on a date.  Your confidence will reach new heights and you will realize you have what it takes to accomplish anything!

I have had the pleasure of working closely with Chu To Bu/Brasa and Paul Jordan for a number of years.  Sensei Jordan is extremely knowledgeable in multiple disciplines, which enables him to run a great program. The gym is full of talent and stand up students which is why I love coming to Avon to conduct seminars!
